Tuesday Afternoon Roundtable: Memorial Day

This week, the Heave staff was asked:

How’d you spend your Memorial Day weekend?

Shelby Shaw

I spent the whole weekend packing boxes, Uhaul boxes in size Small and Medium (saving the Larges for last) which now make it nearly impossible to get from the kitchen to the front door. I have until Wednesday to finish packing up and then Friday I leave for New York, for good. This weekend made me realize, between wishing my brother a happy 24th birthday and seeing Noah Baumbach’s latest film, Frances Ha, that you don’t even know yourself until you have to move everything you own. And this is my fourth time doing so in three years. Talk about a memorial. I hadn’t even realized it was a holiday weekend until I tried to go to the bank for laundry quarters.

One of my close friends does a “Do It Yourself Kuma’s Memorial Day BBQ” where we all have to create a new heavy metal burger that they do not have on the menu. I created the Manowar burger, which consisted of  bun, pepperjack cheese, hot peppers, sriracha, patty, more cheese, more peppers, sriracha again, another patty, more hot peppers, more cheese and a monster load of sriracha, and closed off by the top bun. This was all prepared while wielding a sword and shield.

I must also note that the patties were turkey. Not too metal, I agree, but hey, I’m health conscious!

I went to the Sox/Cubs game with my family and listened to the guy in front of me choose to cheer for America instead of a team. He was pretty upset that I didn’t want to join in on the “U-S-A! U-S-A!” chant. Also the guy behind me fell backwards over several rows of seats not once but twice during the game. I’m mildly curious about whether he made it home alive.

I mean, Arrested Development. I also made burgers from scratch for the first time and saw Fast & Furious 6 on opening day, because I am an American male. Kinda like this:
