Grandson of legendary jazz guitarist Eddie Condon, the brainchild indie/ Balkan folk band Beirut and high school dropout turned world traveler – it seems Zach Condon is quite the character. Before Beirut’s much-adored 2006 debut album, Galug Orkestar, Condon had already been hard at work on his own electronic project, Realpeople. However, as Beirut’s catchy, Eastern European began to gain popularity, Condon devoted the majority of his time to it, and let Realpeople take the back seat for a few years.
After several years under wraps, and a yearlong hiatus from playing music altogether, 2009 saw the revival of Realpeople on Beirut’s March of the Zapotec/Holland EP. Holland, the latter five tracks off the EP provide a striking contrast to March of the Zapotec and all of Beirut’s past material – and why shouldn’t it? Some of the songs on the EP date back to when Condon first started experimenting with Realpeople, way back when he was just 15 years old. Enjoy a track of their latest EP, Holland, below.
