Free TunesI am not a fan of chick singers, with the rare exception of those female singers that have deep, raspy voices that resemble a man's voice more so than a female's. Those singers that have descriptors such as "haunting voice" and "unpretentious" within their work make me cringe. This week's iTunes single artist is no exception.
Holly Conlan, an LA singer and daughter of composer Joseph Conlan, and her latest single off her EP Bird "You are Goodbye" are available to download this week. Conlan's voice does nothing to set her apart from the scores of female singers accompanied by the simplistic chords of a piano, and neither does her songwriting. The song goes through Conlan's memories which I can only assume are all about a former lover because that's all pop female singers write about. Her voice does have that deeper quality that I would normally enjoy, however her poor songwriting bashes any hope of taste within her single. How can one be a goodbye exactly? Can a person even be a parting word? Has this person transformed into an intangible word by a magical wizard or is this a bigger, poorly executed metaphor for the guy that broke Conlan's heart? She also calls this man "the sun gone down" and then rhymes it in a following line calling him "the moon rushed around." So this person is not only a word in the dictionary, but also two celestial bodies at the same time? I want to meet this man and shake his hand, for surely he is a demi-god.
Save yourself the time kids. Even though it's free, don't download it. Or if you do, promptly drag it to the Trash and hit "Delete" after listening to it and degrading it like I did.
