It is no surprise that I’m a huge fan of Eastern RPGs. Give me turn-based combat, wacky anime tropes, and convoluted stories about defeating God any day of the week and you will find me a content man. That is why this week’s sole release has got me excited, and it isn’t even an RPG. Persona 4: Arena is a fighting-game spin-off of Persona 4, which is part of a series of games spun-off from the Megami Tensei series. For those of you unfamiliar with these games, think of them as Final Fantasy fused with Pokemon and sent off to community college where they took a course in Demonology 101. The games are dense, difficult, and immensely rewarding. Rather than rehash the games, I highly recommend you take a look at the extensive history that Hardcore Gaming 101 has put together on the series. Actually, spend the rest of your day on the site (then come right back to Heave!). It’s one of my top sites when I need info on a particular series for an article or my own enjoyment. Once you’re well versed in Megaten, might I suggest Persona 3 or 4 to get you started, you may find the games slowly overtaking your shelf as they do mine.
