Nice To Meet You: Capital Cities

Capital Cities (Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian) have already garnered some success with their remix for Nu Thang, and recently released their self-titled debut EP featuring the infectious jam “Safe and Sound.” Infectious should be in Merchant’s and Simonian’s blood, though. The duo actually met through Craigslist in 2008, and started writing jingles for numerous high profile ad campaigns. Eventually the two realized they had enough musical chemistry to create something better than a new song for “Meow Mix” (I made that part up. I highly doubt they’d make a new “Meow Mix” song. That song is like the “Let It Be” of jingles.)

Capital Cities have some pretty electro pop-tastic music. They’ve got that “California cool” vibe going on, but let a vintage Juno-106 punch through their harmonized vocals, creating an MGMT esque sound that, actually, is probably a little more fun. So much fun that Chelsea Handler added Capital Cities to her “comedy tour” mix. But that doesn’t really tell you anything because Chelsea Handler blows. Have a listen to “Safe and Sound” below.
